There’s alot of judgment about certain feelings, and especially about anger.
I hear this all the time from my clients and group participants:
“Debora, I don’t want to feel angry. How do I get rid of it?”
“I want to STOP my anger.” “Debora, show me how to make my anger go away!”
“Debora, my husband/wife/boss/etc. told me to get OVER my anger…that I’m TOO sensitive!”
What if there was something to be learned and gained from ALL emotions…..
Yes, even anger?
Try This Now:
Think of something or someone that you feel angry about.
Take 3 deep breaths
Ask yourself the questions below, and then Close Your Eyes. (Notice the first thoughts that come into your mind).
What is this anger trying to do for me?
What is this anger trying to teach me?
If this anger had a voice, what does it want to say?
Growing up, I was taught that anger was bad! It was UN-acceptable, UN-ladylike. I was told to “wipe that ugly look off my face”….”come back when I could be pleasant”.
I was labeled “moody”.
I soon learned that many of my feelings were NOT ok.
I learned (and later mastered) the art of suppressing, repressing, denying, ignoring my feelings.
I learned to shove them down, Ben & Jerry them away, Red Wine them away, “take something” to get in a “better” mood.
This habit eventually created a life pattern that caused a MAJOR health crisis for me, and literally almost killed me!
Our emotions are connected to our state of health. Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial health.
Try to deny, suppress, repress Certain emotions…..You’ll also eliminate some of the emotions you love and adore… (like peace, love, joy).
You can’t cut off some emotions and without affecting the entire range of emotions. Eventually you cut them all off and end up living like a zombie, flat, feeling empty, even numb.
